Programs
In the Community Based program, the Big Brother or Big Sister spends a consistent amount of time each week for at least one calendar year with the Little Brother or Little Sister to do activities that they both enjoy. Since the Big Brother and Big Sister volunteers are positive role models, a well-developed and trusted relationship with a 'Big' can boost a child's self-confidence, school grades and social interactions.

Site Based programs is an innovative approach created to reach a more diverse population of children. Bigs and Littles meet for one-to-one mentoring at a designated site. Sites can be schools, libraries, neighborhood community centers or churches. Typically, Bigs and Littles meet once a week, usually at the same time and place to read together, play games or simply talk about life or personal issues - just as friends do.
In collaboration with DeKalb County KEYS (Keep Encouraging Youth To Succeed) Champions, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Kishwaukee Family YMCA are proud to bring their programs to School District #428, Jefferson Elementary and DeKalb High Schools. Bigs were chosen by DeKalb High School staff, as were Littles by Jefferson Elementary. This program will run for ten weeks from Feb. 2011 to the end of the school year. As this is the inaugural of such a program, it is the hope that it can expand its reach elsewhere in the District.
